Students not studying maths and science

Experts are concerned that students will not be prepared for technology driven jobs in the future.  Currently only 10 per cent of Australian students are studying top level maths in Year 12.

Dr Rachel Wilson, senior education lecturer at the University of Sydney, said, “We’re already seeing the impact of the disappearance of current employment fields and the way to protect yourself against those shifts is to be developing in maths and science.”

There are a significant number of Australian students who are not graduating with maths.  The participation rate in advanced maths was 10 per cent in 2014, compared to 14.2 per cent in 1995.  The Australian Council for Education says Australia is being overtaken by other nations.
