School principals subjected to stress and violence

The Australian Principal Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Survey, Dennis Yarrington, Australian Principals

The Australian Principal Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Survey was completed by two thirds of school principals from independent and government schools.  It revealed there is a rise in principals subjected to stress and violence.

44 per cent of principals surveyed reported being threatened, up from 38 per cent in 2011.  One key point was that increased workloads, less time teaching and parents’ violent threats can lead to mental health issues.  This could see principals leave the industry.

Dennis Yarrington, president of the Australian Principals Association said, “We’ve seen and certainly I have seen, where people become angry and just revert to violence or threats of violence.”
